Unclaimed Funds

Unclaimed Funds – Sacramento County

Overview

Sacramento County may be holding unclaimed funds belonging to individuals, businesses, or other entities. In accordance with California law, these funds may become the property of the County if left unclaimed after a specific period of time.

Legal Notice: Claiming Unclaimed Funds

Except as otherwise provided by law, unclaimed money held by a local agency—excluding victim restitution—becomes the agency's property after three years, following a required notice period.

After this three-year period, the Sacramento County Treasurer may publish a notice once a week for two consecutive weeks in a newspaper of general circulation. The unclaimed money becomes the property of the County no earlier than 45 days and no later than 60 days after the first publication date. Once unclaimed funds are transferred to the County, claims will no longer be accepted.

Restitution Funds

Money collected on behalf of crime victims as restitution will be deposited into the Restitution Fund or used to support victim services provided by the County.
